Yes, of course I can grow pumpkins on your apple tree?

Consultants that claim they can do anything often link into hoteliers that think anything is possible. These types of hoteliers operate within an entrepreneurial doctrine with only light references to reports and budgets, insisting instead on throwing beds, food and humans in the air and seeing how they land each month. (maybe not literally, but you get the idea). It’s fine to work with shoot-from-the-hip hoteliers though they may not always be interested in the fine detail that underpins measurable success.

As a hospitality business consultant I hear so many consultants promise the earth and fail to deliver simply because they’re more interested in getting their foot through the door and fudge their way through things, rather than map out a rationalised plan, even it means that ultimately the consultant walks away.

Relating to the title of this post, before I would state that pumpkins can indeed be grown off your apple tree I would undertake a business review to understand how my experience, linked to your business model defines your trading DNA and it’s most realistic capability. From that point forward a worked up business plan is essential to deliver best and worst case scenario’s as well as mid point performance expectations.

This approach also links into the Consultants Charter (Article 11) that sets out capability potential set around metrics.

So growing pumpkins off apple trees isn’t impossible, it just needs an empirical plan to achieve it!
